Raiders Defensive End Carl Nassib Comes Out As Gay, Making Him The First Ever Active Out Player In The NFL

Source - Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player in history to announce that he is gay.

Nassib, 28, is enterting his sixth NFL season, his second with the Raiders after stints with the Browns and Buccaneers. He has 20.5 career sacks.

The Announcement:

For those of you who didn't watch, here's what he had to say...

“What’s up people,” Nassib posted on Instagram. “I’m at my house in West Chester Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now but finally feel comfortable getting it off my chest. I really have the best life, the best family, friends and job a guy can ask for.

“I’m a pretty private person so I hope you guys know that I’m not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that one day, videos like this and the whole coming out process are not necessary, but until then I will do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate and I’m going to start by donating $100,000 to the Trevor Project. They’re an incredible organization, they’re the number one suicide-prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America.”

I genuinely cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Myself and Will Compton were JUST talking about how there are no out NFL players on my show last week. Here was Will's take…

I also had a clip of myself that I decided not to publish because I was too worked up, but the long and short of it is that I feel like this had to happen. I feel like fear is no longer an excuse and once one player comes out more will follow, which I'm hoping is the case here. A humongous congrats to Carl for having the balls to do what he did. It's not easy, especially when you have a platform and know that the second you open your mouth you'll be trending in the US…

Hopefully he's ready for the media firestorm to come. Now if any of you know how to get in touch with Carl, let me know so I can get him on Out & About. Happy Pride.
