Florida State Is Primed To Make A Late-Season Push

There are only two regular season weekends left until we hit the ground running with conference tournaments leading into regionals. The picture at the top has remained largely the same, with the top seven teams in the country now consisting of the four SEC schools we've seen for most of the season — Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Tennessee — followed by the three Texas contenders — Texas, TCU and Texas Tech.

But who is primed to make a postseason push outside of those guys? This weekend gave us a good idea of who outside that top seven could make their way to Omaha and challenge for the national title.

FSU Takes Two From ACC-Leading Notre Dame

Notre Dame was running away with the ACC — and is still going to win the regular season title relatively easily — but Florida State went into South Bend this weekend and took the series from the Fighting Irish behind some stellar pitching. ND's offense has been its calling card all season, but the Irish managed just eight runs across the three-game set.

FSU is now back in contention to host a regional and I would not be surprised to see this team in a super vying for a spot in Omaha.

Arizona, Oregon or Stanford?

Stanford got a huge series win this weekend over Pac-12 leader Arizona, including a 5-4 win in a 13-inning thriller on Friday. The Cardinal are several games behind the Wildcats in the conference standings, but proved they could very conceivably win the Pac-12 Tournament and make a ton of noise in the NCAA Tournament.

And sandwiched between the two on the conference leaderboard is Oregon, who was idle this weekend but will likely be a regional host. It's difficult to distinguish any one of these teams from another right now — though Stanford could make another massive statement against the Ducks next weekend — but I feel confident one of them will be representing the Pac-12 in Omaha. You don't want to let any one of these teams get hot in the postseason.

Texas Handles TCU in Big 12 Battle

In the Big 12 series we had been waiting all season for, Texas went on the road and handled its business against TCU to take a clear position as the favorite in that conference. The first two games were both one-run affairs, but the Longhorns came out swinging on Sunday and took the series with a convincing 9-3 win.

Any team that has to go up against Ty Madden in the postseason in a win-or-go-home scenario is not going to have a great time.

Player of the Week: Will Frizzell, Texas A&M

Texas A&M's SEC Tournament hopes are in jeopardy and its NCAA Tournament hopes could best be described as hanging by a thread, but the Aggies lived to dream for another week after taking the series from Ole Miss behind a monster weekend from Will Frizzell. He went off to the tune of five home runs and 11 RBI over the three games to give the Aggies two huge wins and at least the dream of possibly getting to 13 SEC wins with Auburn and LSU left on the schedule.

Play of the Week: Tim Elko, Ole Miss

That same Ole Miss-A&M series saw one of the coolest moments of the season, when Tim Elko — who tore his ACL just over a month ago — stepped back up to the plate and launched a three-run homer. I don't know how much Elko is going to be able to contribute down the stretch, but he could be the most dangerous pinch hitter in the country in the NCAA Tournament.

Uniform of the Week: Southern Miss

Put the American flag pattern on literally anything and it instantly becomes better. Every team in college baseball should have American flag Sunday uniforms. Just one day a week where everybody is rocking the 50 stars and 13 bars.

We're so close to the postseason I can taste it. Just a couple more weekends of very important baseball and then we're down to nut-cuttin' time. Can't wait.
