Was David Rittich Sent To The Toronto Maple Leafs As An Undercover Agent? Sure Seems That Way

The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to add to their goaltending depth for a playoff run by bringing in David Rittich from the Calgary Flames. Heading back to Calgary in exchange for Big Save Dave would be a 2022 3rd round pick. Now due to quarantine restrictions, it made the most sense for the Leafs to trade for a goalie in their own division. Someone they could plug into the lineup right away, unlike Nick Foligno who has to isolate for a week and at least 3 more games.

David Rittich didn't have to quarantine. He could jump right in the Leafs' lineup before he had time to get new pads (as you can still see all the red in his setup in that picture above). In fact, he didn't even have to change any of his travel plans since he was able to hop right on the plane and bum a ride to Toronto with his former Calgary teammates.

Now what's the saying again--keep your friends close but your enemies closer? Well how much closer could the Flames possibly get than having one of their own infiltrate the Maple Leafs locker room? Is David Rittich an undercover agent? Is he a spy sent to Toronto strictly to sabotage the Leafs from the inside? You tell me.

The Calgary Flames aren't in a playoff position this year. They're 6 points behind Montreal in the standings and have played 3 more games. So if they're not going to be able to knock the Leafs out of the playoffs themselves, the least they can do is plant the seed to sabotage them later. Just goes to show you can never really trust those intradivisional trades. There are always going to be some sinister, ulterior motives. Poor Kyle Dubas. Still just too young and too pure to see what's happening right in front of his eyes.
