First off how much bullshit is this to announce it TODAY? The day where people make lame jokes about retiring only to be fake, etc. Nope. This is apparently real and it's fucking massive. Roy Williams is a Hall of Fame coach at one of the three biggest names in the sport. It just blew the doors open on an already wild offseason with coaching changes We've seen Marquette, Indiana, Texas and Oklahoma all open up. Now the biggest name yet just becomes open.
It's no secret that Roy battled vertigo and had some health scares collapsing on the bench. It's also been a relatively down couple of years for UNC. The rumor was out there that he might retire but I just never believed he'd go out until UNC was back looking more like UNC. Even his own players are tweeting that it's not a joke:
This appears to be very real and just completely changed the landscape of college basketball. It also makes more sense why a bunch of guys - most notably Walker Kessler - hit the transfer portal. I have no idea where UNC goes from here. I assume the first call is Chris Beard. He's linked to every blue blood and this could (I stress could) be a reason why he hasn't said anything about the Texas job yet. I'm sure you'll hear NBA names like Brad Stevens and Billy Donovan tossed around but I put both of those at a real low chance of the job. They could stick within the family and make a call to Wes Miller, the UNC-Greensboro coach who played for Roy at UNC if Beard says no. They could and should call Nate Oats as well. In order I'd call: Stevens, Beard, Oats, Donovan, Miller. That should be the list. You're UNC so you shouldn't really have to go lower than that, even probably not reaching Miller unless you're determined to hire a 'UNC guy.' Maybe they bring Stackhouse back too for that reason. Maybe they give assistant coach Hubert Davis who played there an interview? I just find it hard for UNC to hire a guy with no head coaching experience. Like I said, this is a wild search now.
What a run for Roy too. The guy had a label that he couldn't win in March while at Kansas. At least he couldn't win a title. Then he gets to UNC and wins three. Completely changed how we view him in the overall world. He's now arguably a top-5 coach of all time with those titles. He's arguably more successful than Dean Smith at UNC. Those are words I never thought I'd say. Also put the sportscoat game and dancing game on its head.
All I know is this is what will flip everything in college basketball on its head. We could see a massive coaching carousel now depending who takes this job. How we view UNC could be completely changed. Remember they've made a 'bad' hire before - Matt Doherty. Absolutely insane.
Again - just wait a fucking day to release this so we don't have to search a million times to make sure it's not a joke.
