I mean… After the Bruins' 4-0 win against the Rangers last Thursday I thought the offense came alive and the flood gates were going to open. Boy was I wrong, the B's have now dropped two straight games, 4-0 to the Rangers and now 4-1 to the Penguins last night. Introducing the 2021 Jekyll & Hyde Boston Bruins. Hopped out of the gate 10-1-2 and are now sitting 4th in the East at 14-8-4. They just refuse to string together wins, and haven't won back to back games in more than a month. More than a month!!
The Crosby goal last night was such a kick in the dick. Late in the 1st. Bad angle. Halak should've had it. But Halak (4th straight start) was your best player the last few games. He has done everything he can in this stretch without Rask (who did travel, on taxi squad, but will not play tonight). Sucks Halak put up a stinker last night, but it's on the B's offense to help bail him out. As Gisele Bundchen once said, my husband cannot throw and catch the ball… Jaro Halak cannot stop and also score the goals.
As my friend Ty Anderson pointed out above, it's been 155 minutes since a 5v5 goal. 155 minutes!!
Matt Grzelcyk (who scored the lone goal last night) had 8 shots on goal, in contrast, Charlie Coyle has gone 5 straight games without a shot on goal…. that's less than ideal. There's a ton of players who aren't producing right now.. Can't just harp on Coyle but man has this secondary scoring has dried up. It's frustrating.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's time for Don Sweeney to get this team some help, the B's are limping right now, and if this continues they'll be out of a playoff spot. Sure, you can argue that Cassidy isn't getting the most out of his players right now. But on paper this team is certainly better than they look. So where do they go from here?
Ultimately it's on Don Sweeney to improve the team. Remember last week he said there will be a "shake up" if necessary? Uhhhh Don you're on the hot seat now my guy. I don't know what the fuck you're waiting for. The Bruins have been linked to Mattias Ekholm, who would be a significant upgrade on the back end. Elliotte Friedman says a package would look like a 1st rounder and 2 prospects. I do that yesterday. But where will they turn to help this offense? Perhaps a Palmieri from NJD? Or do they look at Providence and at Jakub Lauko… Cameron Hughes? Oskar Steen will make his NHL debut tonight (3G, 5A 8 points in 12GP, 165th overall pick in 2016).
Whoever it is, this team needs help. And they need it sooner than later before they fall entirely apart.
The B's will look to turn the page tonight, and a rookie goaltender will be in net.
They were deciding if they wanted to start Jeremy Swayman (who is perfect in the AHL, and is the successor to Tuukka Rask), or if they wanted to give Dan Vladar the net. It makes sense Vladar would get the start, if you believe in seniority, he's "due", but you simply cannot deny Swayman has the hot hand right now. I thought he would give you the best chance to win tonight over Vladar, but either way the Bruins will have to rally around their young goaltender if they want a chance to win tonight. Tuukka Rask skated again today and is "trending well" per Bruce Cassidy, perhaps we will see him Thursday vs. BUF.
Other news… Like I said, Oskar Steen will make his NHL debut as well. Anders Bjork gets the boot. Steen will play with Coyle and Ritchie on the 3rd line. Craig Smith stays with Jake DeBrusk and David Krejci on the 2nd line. Here are some injury updates…
The Bruins need a spark tonight, they need something, it's tough to watch this team right now but alas…
It's a great night to win a hockey game. Because I for one, am sick and tired of the Boston Bruins losing hockey games.
