Wink, Wink - Rick Pitino Says He's Not A Candidate For The Boston College Job, Or Any Other Job In The Country
I don't know why but Rick Pitino saying he's not a candidate for ANY job in the middle of February is fucking hilarious. There's one job open right now - Boston College after it fired Jim Christian yesterday. Rick Pitino just making sure he controls the story before it controls him. And by that I mean, he's making sure everyone remembers he's coaching college basketball again and would 100% jump at a big time job. Pitino coaches at BU and then had what I would say was a great run with the Celtics. Honestly, I wish he stayed with the Celtics forever after leaving Kentucky.
This is truly a power move by Pitino though. Just make sure everyone knows he's still out there for every job in the country. He's happy at Iona, where he can start a rivalry with Clem and Siena. At the same time, not sure why he'd want the BC job. It's a TOUGH job right now thanks to the lack of money going to the program. Also the fans just don't give a shit about BC basketball right now. It's been a long time since Al Skinner had success there. That's why this hire is so important to the program and can't miss. They went with two mid-major coaches the last two times in Steve Donahue and Jim Christian - didn't really work out. Unfortunately I think they'll miss out on who would be awesome there in John Becker for that reason and ultimately go with a BC guy in Howard Eisley. Not a bad hire by any means, just going the assistant coach route.
I would also like to say that at this moment I will not be interviewing for any open jobs in college basketball. We've also reached the point where John Beilein is going to be attached to every single job opening in the country. Of course he'd be good, he's John Beilein, but let's calm down on the Beilein being hired by every damn school in the country. He's 68 years old, how long do you think he'd coach on a new contract? Do you really want to find another coach in 5-6 years? I actually like Pitino at Iona. He can be himself there and just dominate mid-major hoops.
