What A Weird Ass Year - First Time In 60 Years, No Blue Bloods In College Hoops Are Ranked Because They All Suck
Here we are the day after the Super Bowl, which officially starts college basketball season for the casual fan. They start to watch tonight with no other sports on TV and get ready for conference tournaments/NCAA Tournament next month. Most of the time when these people tune in it's teams like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and UNC all ranked in the top-10/15. At least one or two of them are talked about as the favorite to win the title.
But this year? Talk about a backwards ass season. Look at that tweet from Bryan Ives. None of the top THIRTEEN programs with wins are even ranked. First time in 60 years that we don't have Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, UNC or UCLA ranked. Throw in Michigan State and I bet that goes back even longer. I legit never thought I'd see a season like this. A season where Loyola Chicago is ranked. A season where Rutgers is ranked WITH Loyola Chicago. A season where we are talking about Baylor as the best team in the country. Missouri is ranked 10th in the country! Missouri! Nothing is making fucking sense. Look at this top-25:
The only teams ranked with the most Final Fours are Ohio State/Michigan
All these stats just show how wild this year is. The argument is whether or not it's good for the sport and that depends who you're talking to. If you want to bring in the casual fan, it's not good. The casual fans want to watch great teams with names they know. Just how it works out and a reason why people want Cinderellas in the NCAA Tournament to lose after the first weekend. If you're a die hard college hoops fan with no ties to the blue bloods, then you love it. Mix it up who is competing for titles and who is getting the national attention. What does suck though is we're not going to be able to highlight Baylor in some marquee matchups right after football:
There was an argument over the past week about Baylor vs Gonzaga and who is really the best team right now. That's why it sucks we're not getting these games with Baylor getting top-15 teams. More eyeballs on the best teams in the sport is a good thing. It truly is wide open after Baylor/Gonzaga. Good luck figuring out who is where for me I'd go:
Tier 1: Gonzaga, Baylor
Tier 2: Ohio State, Michigan, Houston, Illinois, Nova, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma
Tier 3: WVU, Alabama, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, USC, Tennessee, Virginia
Gonna be the weirdest March ever and it's strictly because of this and not even playing all in Indiana. Just so many random teams good and so many great programs sucking ass. It's not even like you can point at what specific thing with these teams. Not all the blue bloods are super young, they all have different makeups. The fact is they all just suck.
