Poor Sean Payton Looked Like His Dog Ran Away While Discussing How The Chiefs Traded Up To Draft Patrick Mahomes One Pick Before The Saints Could
I've seen that look before because that's the exact face I have every time I see a guy I missed by 1 pick in my fantasy draft score a touchdown on the Red Zone Channel. Utter dejection. Not only because that player could be helping my team right now. But because I would look so smart to everyone else in my league if they had just slide ONE MORE MOTHERFUCKING SPOT. While missing out on the one that got away may cost me a few hundred bucks and the right to talk shit to my friends, Sean Payton missed out on the glitch that has either won MVP or made the Super Bowl every year as a starter. During that same timeframe, Payton dealt with a quarterback whose arm went from bad to worse to noodle with a side of broken ribs and got to the point Payton had to call a trick play for Jameis Winston in the playoffs just to get the football in the hands of a guy who could actually air it out.
I don't know if the Saints would've actually selected Patrick Mahomes if he was there at 11 since they did have a future Hall of Famer at QB1. But Payton said they would have before the 2018 NFL Draft when all Patrick Mahomes had done in the regular season was start a meaningless Week 17 game where he went for 284 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 pick.
Instead New Orleans took a fine player in Marshon Lattimore, who just so happened to be sandwiched between two of the best quarterbacks in the game right now that just turned old enough to rent a car in any state without having to pay extra fees.

I guess the fair rebuttal would be if you see a player that is the best quarterback you have ever scouted, you don't wait at your pick and hope he gets there. However, I'm sure every time Sean Payton thinks about that, this is the EXACT face he makes.
Luckily for Payton and Saints fans, New Orleans has the inside track to re-sign a QB that was 2nd in the league in touchdowns last season and pound for pound may be the only player that can match Mahomes in generating excitement on a football field.
