Just a Good Ol' Fashioned "Oscar Pistorius Shot And Killed His Girlfriend" Joke At The Bottom Of a Receipt

TBL - Oscar Pistorius was found not guilty of the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last month. (He was found guilty of culpable homicide and a firearms charge.) As everyone knows, tragedy plus time equals comedy, so Scorch-o-Rama, a cafe in Wellington, New Zealand, thought it would be a good idea to put the following “joke” on the bottom of receipts. “Oscar Pistorius was super keen to get a new bathroom door, but his girlfriend was dead against it.” Yikes. That was on the bottom of receipts for a few hours before people started to complain and Scorch-o-Rama decided maybe that was a bad decision. The cafe’s owner has since apologized and donated $10,000 to Women’s Refuge.

I’m not going to sit here and lie to you guys. It took me 30 minutes to understand the joke. I first wrote this blog saying I don’t understand the joke because I don’t speak Australian, but I guess I didn’t get it because I’m not very smart. It’s a funny joke. I don’t know what it was doing on the bottom of a receipt from a cafe, but that’s neither here nor there. Gotta know your audience before you start printing out jokes about nubby legged runners going HAM on their girlfriends. And I suppose people are freaking out about it because any time you poke fun of a girl who was shot to death by her boyfriend, it’s not a good look? I guess? I don’t know. Everyone needs to calm down. You live in Australia. If you can avoid the man-eating spiders and snakes that kill you if you make eye contact, your life is pretty much the bees knees. As for the cafe, any publicity is good publicity. Try their iced coffee, it’s colder than Pistorius’ girlfriend’s lifeless body.
