How Often Does USC Quarterback Kedon Slovis Have to Hear About Graham Harrell's Pass to Michael Crabtree?
To send you into the weekend, it's a twofer on today's Pardon My Take. ESPN's Booger McFarland joined the show once again, and we also welcomed on USC QB Kedon Slovis. The man under center for the Trojans discussed his recruiting journey, Leroy previously reporting on him, being the man at USC, and much more. Out in Southern California, Slovis is actually coached by former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell, who is the OC for the Trojans. So, with that, how often does the former Red Raider bring up his epic touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree? Slovis gives us some insight:
Mr. Cat: So, your offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, I think you havee a pretty good relationship with him. Actually, he was very gracious when Duggs went to USC as offensive coordinator during quarantine. I appreciate, by the way, USC is the only school that hasn't had the Duggs curse. Florida State, Tennessee, Toledo, Texas Tech, have all had very bad seasons, so we'll keep that going. But Graham Harrell, how many times he made you watch the Texas Tech-Texas game with the famous Crabtree catch? Like, I imagine Graham Harrell, ends every film session, like, "Hey, let's pop this tape in real quick and let's let's watch this night."
Kedon Slovis: See, it's pretty funny because I remember it was like his first week there, at school, and he's like, you know, they run four verticals, that was the play, and he just back shouldered it to Crabtree. So he's like, you know, against Texas, this is the kind of look we had, you know, that throw I made. And everyone's kind of looking at him like, "What?" Like no one said a word. And in my head I'm like, "I know exactly what he's talking about."
Kedon Slovis: And so no one said like a word, maybe the kids now are too young or something. But I was like the youngest one in the room and I knew what he's talking about so much. So, I went to him after and I was like, "You're talking about the Texas Tech-Texas game where you guys won, right?" He was like, "Yeah, no one even knew what I was talking about." I was like, "Yeah, I got you." And then every time we have like a back shoulder throw, he's always like, "Yeah, like that one I made to Crab back in the day."
Mr. Cat: That must suck for him to have that moment of realization, like, "Shit." Because that game was so great that if I were Graham Harrell, I would probably just walk around with like an iPad stuck to my neck, just playing it on loop. So, I guess he was probably being gracious just throwing it in there, like, "Oh yeah, back shoulder to Crabtree. But I love that he is still bringing it up, he should bring it up.
Kedon Slovis: Yeah, well when I tell people my coach is Graham Harrell, usually they're like, "Who?" And then I'm like, "The guy who beat Texas," and they're like, "Oh, yeah, I kind of remember that." So, it's kind of like, he needs a patch or something that says, "I beat Texas in 2008 or whatever year it was."
Welcome to the Pardon My Take QB Family, Kedon. This man is going to be balling out on Sunday's in a couple of years, and you'll all be able to say you were on the Slovis Train when he came on Pardon My Take back in December 2020.
