I Stumped Pierre McGuire About A Player's School On This Week's Spittin' Chiclets
This week's Spittin' Chiclets is our first one of the 2020-21 NHL season (whenever it starts) and we wanted kick things back off with a noteworthy guest. So we dropped the 'NHL on NBC's resident lightning rod/master of minutiae Pierre McGuire. Whether you love Pierre or not (and I've certainly had things to say over the years), he's definitely worth listening to on this episode.
One of Pierre's telecast trademarks is knowing the high school/college/prep school/junior team of seemingly ever player to ever suit up for an NHL squad.
Sonk!
I was a definitely surprised he didn't know Big Jim went to the school for misfits a couple of blocks from the Garden and led it to a state title in 1984 before putting Merrimack College on the hockey map.
"What do I look like, Christopher Columbo?"
But Pierre pulled off some brilliant spin after whiffing with St. John's and Archies.
"I don't know his school but I beat him as an assistant" is some Jim Carville-level stuff. No bullshittin', the fellas had a genuinely fun time interviewing Pierre. We also asked him about his infamous season in Hartford, whether the HHOF favors Canadians [ed: it does], when we should expect to have NHL games back, Jagr's time in Washington, and much more. Take a listen.
