A Win For America: Starting Tomorrow, Disney World Is Banning Selfie Sticks

WaPo - Starting Tuesday, Disney tourists will be forced to rely only on their arms for taking photos. The selfie stick has been banned from the land of Mickey Mouse. Tragic, we know. “We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie-sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast,” a Disney spokeswoman said Friday. She’s not kidding. Earlier this week, a roller coaster passenger at Disney California Adventure park pulled out a selfie stick mid-ride, shutting down the coaster for an hour, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Disney previously tried banning the sticks only from rides in which they would be dangerous, but tourists kept bringing them out anyway. (Did they think you can pull out a selfie stick discreetly?) This week’s incident seemed to be the last straw. As of June 30, selfie sticks will be confiscated and stowed at security at all Disney theme parks. The news is another marker on the road to the selfie stick’s demise. The cheap metal rods have been banned from peak selfie destinations across the world, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Lollapallooza, from the Kentucky Derby to the Wimbledon tennis championships. You can still selfie-stick at the Lincoln Memorial, but there will be no sticks near paintings of Lincoln in the National Portrait Gallery.

I hate selfie stick people, as do most. But I hate stupid people more. I don’t want to ban selfie sticks from places, I want to ban stupid people from places. And I think that is what Disney World is doing here, because it just so happens you can usually spot a stupid person by their usage of selfie sticks. That might be unfair because I have to imagine there are smart people who use selfie sticks too because realistically, they are very practical. They make sense to use to take pictures. But the issue is only stupid people are using them. So since Disney World can’t ban stupid people, nor would they want to because who else would pay 30 dollars for a tshirt, so they have to ban the selfie stick. So Disney World is doing what they can do so nobody dies via selfie stick to the head on Space Mountain.

PS: Is Disney World fun? I went at like 7 years old and just remember waiting in lines everywhere and a parade going down the road every 2 minutes. That’s about all I remember. Lines and walking and parades. If you go as an adult is it a good time? I assume you appreciate it more, as with most thing when you’re older, but is it worth the outrageous prices? Or are you better off just going to Universal? Thanks for your input.
