Obama Chimes in on Redskins Name Debacle
“If I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team — even if it had a storied history — that was offending a sizeable group of people, I’d think about changing it,” Obama said in an interview published by the Associated Press on Saturday.
It’s the never ending conversation here in the DC area. The fucking team name. It’s non-stop. Everyone is asked about it, so it was only a matter of time until Obama was asked. And like most people, he hemmed and hawed and kinda sorta said it was kinda racist, and maybe should be changed. And no, it does not matter that he answered a question about the team name. Someone asked him a question, and he answered. There’s only one thing more important than politics around here, and that thing is the Washington Redskins.
As for the name, it’s a tricky situation, because there is zero intent to offend anyone with the name. At this point, in context, the name “Redskins” serves as only the name of the football team. So if the intent to offend is not present, is the name still offensive? Some say yes, some say no.
I don’t think it’s the BEST name for the team. Combine how racist original team owner George Preston Marshall was, and the history of the mass murder of millions of native americans, and it makes me think naming a team after a group of people, and using their skin color in the name, is not the absolute best nickname.
And yes, if we are arguing team names and mascots, this should probablyyyy go as well.
