Hofstra and Iona Are Determining Home Court for Their Basketball Game This Season by Having the Mascots Play Rock, Paper, Scissors
Who said college basketball games were going to be difficult to schedule during a pandemic? Not only did Hofstra and Iona sign a contract to play games in each of the next three seasons, but they added the best method ever devised to decide who gets home court in the first and third games.
GoHofstra — The home site for the 2020-21 match-up on Wednesday, December 23, will be decided via a best of three series of "Rock Paper Scissors" between mascots from each school - Willie Pride of Hofstra and Killian of Iona. The battle of the mascots will occur on Wednesday, November 4 at 5 p.m.
The winner of the Rock Paper Scissors contest will host the game in 2020-21 and 2022-23, with the other institution hosting the game in 2021-22.
Hell yes. We need more mascot rock, paper, scissors battles to determine things like this in college athletics. This is fun with two mid-major programs, but can you imagine if we had some big-time non-conference matchups determined this way? Put the Gonzaga and Kansas mascots on television right now and have them go at it — assuming programs like that ever start playing those great non-conference games on campus instead of in random NBA arenas. The ratings would explode.
But I love that we have Rick Pitino now coaching at a program whose game locations are being determined in ways such as this. Having him coaching again just outside New York City is going to be appointment television and I can't wait.
Also, we should use rock, paper, scissors to make more decisions in this country and that is the only proper way to refer to the game. Any other order is false.
