This Is A NSFW NSFL & Very Wet Subreddit Deep Dive

Welcome to Reddithole, I’ll be your Alice as we explore the bizarre, strange, and downright freaky side of Subreddits.

Imagine, if you will, a man. We’ll call him Jed. He’s a normal guy, just like most men. He puts his pants on one leg at a time. He drinks hot black coffee in the dead of the summer. He likes hot chicks in small bikinis. He still subscribes to the print version of Sports Illustrated, just to get the Swimsuit Edition so he can talk about it with his bros.

One fateful day this man is sitting in his barcalounger watching Florida Atlantic play football, the purer, more manly version of the sport, when an unexpected stormfront hits. Too late to put the pool furniture away, he watches as the wind whips through his little slice of paradise. A bewildered look washes over his face as one of the lounge chairs topples into the pool and slowly, effortlessly, sinks to the bottom.

Just like that, the storm passes. He walks out to survey the damage; nothing too bad, maybe the shade umbrella he forgot to put down got a little banged up. Going to catch hell from the ol’ ball and chain about that, he thinks. Fuck. His eyes wander back to the submerged chair. A thought occurs to him. He pulls out his Android and snaps a photo. Gonna post this to Reddit, he says to himself. Genius.

To not get us sued (company woman), I made this account to showcase some of my favorites from the Sub.

And just like that, it spread like the Santa Ana wildfire. A subreddit is born.

Let’s take a dive DEEP down the RedditHole.

This week, we’re taking out the looking glass and peering into /r/chairsunderwater/ -- a subreddit dedicated to chairs. Underwater. A five year old subreddit with 122k subscribers and thousands of posts.

Alert. This is not a test.

There’s one thing you’re going to notice from the very beginning: apparently it’s NSFW. Mostly, because you’ll become so fascinated that your productivity will plummet and your co-workers might be distracted with your sounds of wonder.

Chairs. Underwater. As far as the fingers can scroll.

When you take a further look, you’ll find that NSFW is not an acronym for “Not Safe For Work”; it ACTUALLY stands for “Not Submerged Fully In Water.”

Ohhhh.

This is NSFW work in action -- twins even.

And this is Extreme NSFW in action and was described as, “Just the tip just to see how it feels.”

What makes Chairs Underwater so great is not just the wholesome community, but the commitment they exhibit. Some of the comments are just incredible, like the ones here that were posted below the Extreme NSFW beauty above.

I defy anyone to not get lost in this sub. Impossible. Internet purity in its rarest form.

While Reddit is often seen as the Wild West of the internet, even subreddits like this have rules. The laws of the Cowboy. I’m in love.

Maybe my favorite thing about this wondrous place? The NSFL (Not safe for life) tag. Usually that’s a sign you see and you head for the hills. Typically extreme fetishes, violence, and content that makes your blood curdle.

But on r/chairsunderwater, NSFL means “Not Submerged, Found on Land.” You don’t want a mod to tag your post NSFL, that’s for sure.

I’d like to think that most of these photos weren’t staged but as we learned from the Social Dilemma, the content game is a business as much as it is entertainment. Some of these photos are so absurd, so perfect, there’s not a chance in hell that they were not taken in the wild. And that’s what makes this subreddit so pure, so perfect. A chair in the water, and a hundred thousand people commenting in double entendres in what amounts to a postmodern critique on the hypersexuality of modern society.

I’ve never been baptized but I imagine I now understand what it feels like to be clean again. I am internet reborn and have found an anchor to keep my brain from falling into the cynicism that comes along with spending too much time on Twitter. I highly suggest this sub for anyone who wants to see the beautiful, the absurd, and the cinematic.

Chairs. Underwater.

It’s a VIBE.

God Bless El Nino, Tad, and that fateful Florida Atlantic game that birthed this phenomenon. And fuck the poser that tried to make chairs into IG models.
