Mike Soroka Suffers Injury Trying to Cover First Base

No. Not like this.

In the third inning against the New York Mets on Monday night, Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka went to cover first base on a ground ball and didn't make it more than a step off the mound before going to the ground in pain. I don't want to speculate what the injury is, but it seems fairly apparent that it's really bad.

This is obviously awful news for a Braves team which has already had its struggles with starting pitching this season, but it's just bad for baseball. Soroka finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 and was third in the league in ERA at 2.68.

Damn it, this is just not fair. Soroka is one of the brightest young stars in baseball and it looks like Atlanta will be without him for quite some time.

And as far as the baseball side of things goes, this creates a pretty dire situation for the Braves' starting rotation. Aside from Max Fried, there is not another starting pitcher the Braves currently have on the roster anybody would feel very good about putting out there right now.

I hope Soroka is as ok as he can be and that maybe the injury isn't as serious as we fear, but this looks like a pretty serious blow dealt to one of the best young pitchers in baseball.

Update: Soroka suffered a torn right Achilles and is done for the season. Life is pain.
