Listen I understand this world of eSports is new and nerdy and kind of a joke at this point. But the NFL is the only sport remaining that still has more viewers than eSports. In 2013 a League of Legends championship did better ratings than the NBA Finals, the BCS championship, the Final Four and the World Series. So don’t act like there’s not a market for it or that it doesnt deserve to be on TV. Ratings and cash rule, brotha. If you want to make the argument that this should be on like Spike TV or G4 or some channel like that, I guess I’m ok with that. But not with that argument coming from an ESPN personality. ESPN, the Worldwide Leader, that will make a complete mockery out of sports coverage in order to just pander to the masses. Tell you every time Tebow takes a dump or update you on Lebron’s instagram activity. Employ people like Skip Bayless and Stephen A who say whatever they possibly can to garner ratings. For fuck’s sake Colin Cowherd has a running argument that you can’t be a good quarterback in the NFL if you wear your hat backwards. Thats a completely fictional story line created for the sake of entertainment and ratings. Sort of like airing video games. And if ESPN is gonna air poker or billiards or bowling then they most certainly can air video games which CRUSHES in terms of popularity.
And no matter what your stance on the entire idea of airing eSports, the last thing that deserved to be made fun of were the announcers. If video games aint your thing, thats fine. But video games are these guys’ thing. And they crush it. They do video games and they do it well. You can make fun of the subject matter and make fun of the nerd rhetoric, but dont act like those guys arent good at what they do. There’s a huge, huge market for people who will watch eSports on TV and that is 100% because of the commentators turning it in to entertainment. Those guys were very good at their craft, no matter how nerdy it is. I just dont understand these guys who knock gamers or the broadcasters of eSports for being nerdy. I think its fucking incredible to make money or pay for college or have a professional career playing video games. If you cant get down with that as some sort of macho jock you’re just an insecure dick.
