The Redskins Will Pick Up the 2016 Option On RG3 And I Can't Do Anything But Trust Scot McCloughan Is Making The Right Choice

PFT - Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan announced that the team is exercising their option on Griffin’s pick ahead of the May 3 deadline to do so. The move puts Griffin in position to earn just over $16 million in 2016, which the Redskins can rescind if Griffin is healthy but the option is guaranteed against injury. That’s not a small concern for a player who has dealt with serious injuries in his three-year NFL career, although Griffin insisted this month that the option question wasn’t a big concern for him. Instead, Griffin said that he’s focused on improving his performance after two rough seasons.

What a day. Wizards swept last night, I’m shitting my pants about the Caps, and then here come the Redskins announcing they are picking up RG3’s 5th year option for 2016. I can’t sit here and go over the ebbs and flows and ups and downs and pros and cons of RG3 any more. One day he’s good, the next he’s not. One day he is making all the right throws, the next he looks worried and helpless. We don’t know what we’re getting with him. The good news is he isn’t nearly as bad as he’s made out to be. Not even close. He isn’t a bottom 5 QB. He doesn’t throw a ton of picks. He still has better than average QB speed and mobility. And he’s still so fucking young. We forget just how young he is. He’s not a guy in his 10th season still throwing horrific interceptions. He’s had 2 straight injury plagued seasons that have hampered his development. That’s why I have to trust Scot McCloughan here. This guy built the San Fran and Seattle teams that are dominant out West. If he thinks RG3 deserves to have another season in DC, I can’t argue with him. That guy knows more football than everyone else in the Skins front office for the last 20 years combined. It’s almost impossible to be a good NFL QB. There’s about 5 or 6 of them. Then you have average guys who still make mistakes, then you have shitty guys who make you think “wow, if these guys are NFL QBs, it must really be the hardest job on the planet”. RG3 still completed 68.7% of his passes last season. Still had an 86.9 QB Rating (up from the previous season, but down from 102.1 his rookie year). And this guy was born in 1990. Again, I’m just going to trust McCloughan and see how it plays out. Nothing else you can do.
