Daily News Calls The Mets A "Train Wreck" After Dropping 2 Out Of 3 To The Yankees

14-5. Best record in baseball. One series removed from an 11 game winning streak. Opened up an early 5 game lead in the division. 7 ahead of the Nationals. A start hot enough for them to bank 14 wins out of their first 19 games, making the goal of winning 85, 86 games that much more attainable. If they play .500 ball from here on out, they’ll still win 85. If they play .488 ball which they did last year, should still win about 83 games. And thats all obviously aiming low with how promising this pitching staff is.

Now, were they a disaster last night? Yes. Is the “train wreck” a Subway Series pun that John Harper probably would have used for whichever team lost 2 out of 3? Yes. Is this the Daily News selling papers with the old school version of clickbait? Yes. But give me a goddam break. Losing 2 out of 3 to the Yankees blows. deGrom was a disappointment. The sloppy play last night was unbearable. The fact that they were even in that game despite their mental mistakes was shocking. The middle infield defense is as bad as it gets. And I’ll even take it a step further for John Harper and give him the fact that the Mets offense is still not very good and maintaining this level of play with the lack of offensive talent and all their injuries may not be realistic. But the fact that New York newspapers are still using the Sky Is Falling angle for the Mets is just lazy. The laundry list of positive things you could write about the Mets right now could give you articles for days on end. Lagares emerging as an offensive talent to match his glove. Plawecki filling in seamlessly to replace d’Arnaud. Familia stepping up and being a better closer than we could have even expected Mejia to be. Duda leading this team with his bat once again this season. Shit, even Flores, who’s a nightmare in the field, is swinging the stick.

Bottom line is despite losing 2 of 3 in a big series with bragging rights on the line, going the old “The Mets suck” route right now is just lazy and lame. At least try to be original. Be a little more creative. The team off to the hottest start in baseball is not a “train wreck.” No matter how you cut it.
