The Big Bad Islanders Won't Stop Complaining About Tom Wilson's Hit And It's Getting Kind Of Sad

The NHL said no further discipline for Tom Wilson killing a man. He served his 2 minute penalty for being taller than Visnovsky and that was that. However, the Islanders, and Islanders fans, can’t seem to get over it. The fans are the worst. One second they are the self proclaimed bad boys of hockey. Calling opposing fans faggots, keying their cars, drinking from sun up to sun down. Vikings. Barbarians. Untilllllll one of their players gets hit hard, then it’s water works city. Wahhhhh you can’t hit that hard, wahhhhh. Unreal hypocrisy. I really expected better from Isles fans. I was ready to buy in that you guys were the bad boys. That you were here for playoff hockey. Disappointing.

And then the Islanders players. They are all upset because Brooks Laich said Willy knocking Visnovsky out gave the Caps an advantage. Uhhh, no shit it did. I don’t see the big deal about saying that. The Isles were left with 5 dmen. You don’t openly root for a guy to get injured, but by comparison, let’s say Kobe Bryant gets hurt in the middle of a game, you aren’t necessarily upset about it either.

DCSB - “And what it did was Visnovsky got knocked out of the game,” Laich said. “That puts them down to five D, in the second period, which — with the way we play with a heavy forecheck, a grinding forecheck, big forwards that finish our checks — playing with six defensemen is tough enough. But playing with five is even more difficult. So it’s a quote-unquote ‘good’ penalty to take. It knocks them down to five defensemen. We kill the penalty off, we get momentum and now we can really start to lean on their defense corps with only five guys left.”

One Islanders blogger described Laich’s comments as “absolutely disgusting,” “complete and utter idiocy,” “glorifying goonish behavior” and “stunning.”

The Islanders, of course, had already been upset with Wilson. Via SNY:

“The puck wasn’t even close to where Lubo was,” John Tavares said. “So it’s just a complete target of a defenseless player.”

“[Wilson] went in to hurt our guy, obviously,” Thomas Hickey said. “You know, Lubo’s a 5-foot-10 guy with a head injury, and you go and make a hit like that. There’s a penalty on the play. I guess I won’t say too much more than that.”

“We’ve seen the hit,” Matt Martin said. “I think we can throw those hits too.”

“We could have easily hit a lot of guys like that, too,” Tavares said,” via the New York Times. “We stay within the rules and play the game the right way.”

Ho-ly Shit, you guys. Holy shit. Can Tavares whine more? Hits like that happen all the time. He knows it too. But then he pulls out the “playing the game the right way” card? Get out of here.

The only person I respect in all of this is Matt Martin. He didn’t cry about it. He knows he’s thrown his fair share of hits like that. So he didn’t whine, he said he’s out to get even. He’s the only guy holding up his end of the bad boy Islanders bargain. Tom Wilson is just planting his flag in everyone else’s heads, scooping up every last piece of real estate they’ve got.
