You know, typically "fun" is not a word I apply to the Patriots very often. Unless I'm talking about Lane Johnson saying "fun" is the reason the Eagles won the Super Bowl just before his team goes 9-7 as the Patriots win a Super Bowl or Cassius Marsh talks about how happy we was getting traded from New England to a 1-12 Niners team, the whole concept is simply not a sandbox I choose to play in. Fun is what you have at a Duckboat parade on the first Tuesday in February or the baroque pop band who brought us "Some Nights." But I'm going to break that guideline right now because today it's relevant.
Anyway, Randy Moss was on "Get Up" this morning and was asked about what the Patriots offense should look like with Cam Newton. And he introduced that word that gets brought up in the Pats meeting rooms as often as "shazbot."
"I think we are really getting ready to see how fun that offense can really be," Moss said. "Not discrediting anything Tom accomplished because he accomplished some great things, but I think being able to have a guy like Cam Newton that can run the ball, they are able to spread guys out, and then being able to be that viable threat in the passing game that he can just tuck the ball and run."
Continuing on the theme he added, “There is going to be a change in New England. I think we are going to see them have a lot more fun out there and Cam Newton is going to give them that opportunity for the fans -- not just the New England Patriots fans, but the football fans around the world -- to really see how fun this offense can really be."
Well alright then. Not "fun." Not "more fun." But "a lot more fun." His words, not mine.
Belichick and Brady have both said time and again Moss is the smartest football mind they've ever coached/played with. That he taught them both as much about receiving and exploiting coverages as anyone. And if you ask me to name the one guy who's come through Foxboro who exemplified the concept of crushing an opponent's will while having "fun," it really comes down to either Moss or Gronk, 1A/1B.
Personally, this looks like more fun than anything I expect out of Newton spreading out a defense and then tucking the ball and running it:
But then again, tucking and running is exactly what the Ravens did last year behind Lamar Alexander and they looked like they were enjoying themselves a hell of a lot more than Brady did ripping off his chin strap while the punting unit came on the field. And physically beating the bag out of a defense is fun in a different, sort of non-Fantasy Football way. Like when the Patriots did it to the Chargers in the 2018 Divisional round and all those times breaking the Colts' will. So who am I to argue with the greatest receiver of all time and the guy who should get the Monday Night Football gig? If he says it'll be more fun, I'm preparing for more fun.
And while I'm explaining myself, I understand I've written a ton about Cam Newton over the last three days. More than I ever try to write about a single topic no matter how newsworthy. But then when I go to check everything else going on in the world, it ends up like this:
So forgive me if I skate my lane for a while longer.
