For the first time in the show's history, HBO's Hard Knocks will feature two teams in 2020, following both the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.
I guess the angle here is both teams getting ready to move into a new stadium and maybe getting two different perspectives on what the teams did differently throughout the pandemic and how that affects things could be interesting. My main concern is that the necessity of sharing time could cut down on the cool, in-depth stories of players on the bubble or who have overcome different obstacles which is usually the best part of the show.
But on the whole, I don't think this should have too much of an impact. I suppose the same old format of the show was wearing thin and HBO and NFL Films wanted to try something different. I don't know how much different just showing two teams — one of whom was just on the show a few years ago — will be, but I guess we'll all find out together.
Honestly, the first shot of the sprinkler on the practice field as the theme music starts playing is going to be such an incredible moment, I don't think any of us will care how good the actual show is as long as it's still our seasonal reminder that football is coming. The first episode of Hard Knocks is always a fun barometer of football season, but this year's will absolutely hit different.
Just give us football.
