The best baseball name since Mickey Moniak has arrived to wear the red pinstripes, and we should all be happy. Why? Because not only was Mick Abel born and named to throw gas, he can actually sling. HARD. Up to 100mph in bullpen sessions. And at 18-years of age, it's actually legal to watch some of these pitches and get wet.
Peep this HEAVY two-seamer clicking in at 94:
Or this slider that will only improve:
Now observe in awe at that slider overlay with his sinker:
Oh, and the #1 overall pick from last year has been catching him and has been beyond impressed - quote from 94.1 WIP:
Adley Rutschman, had to say about Abel in bullpens leading up to the draft. He said that he couldn't believe the pitches he caught came from a high school pitcher, and that "you rarely see an arm that good," adding that Abel's repertoire is "electric" and "smooth."
And there you have it. Baseball picks are weird. There have been PLENTY of top 5 selected, sure-fire products who you never end up hearing about other than when they flame out of the game (s/o Mark Appel). But also there are guys like arguably the greatest player of all-time, Mike Trout who was picked 25th overall. Abel is a solid pick for the Phils at 15 and has already drawn early comparisons to Mark Prior and even, wait for it…Doc. Still, that means nothing. Here's to all the luck in the world to this kid. Hopefully we see him in The Show sooner than later.
PS - Those pitches made it move so here's some King Nola to help pitch the tent even higher. Dammit I miss baseball.
