Internet Freaks Out When Duke Championship Campus Celebration Isn't Called A "Riot"
Two hottest things on Twitter – hating Duke and manufactured outrage. Hit the perfect storm of the two last night when Duke took down the title then pictures popped up of them starting fires on campus and every news outlet called it “celebrating.” Everyone comparing it to Ferguson, talking about how it’s just another example of elitist rich kids getting off the hook, how this is called a riot anywhere else. Small sample:
Only problem is, it was an organized bonfire with a city permit and supervision from trained fire marshals. One big group of students gathered in a circle who were allowed to put a total of 3 benches into the middle of a clearing to start a bonfire and cheer with a 2 hour limit. Seriously there was an email from the Dean setting it up beforehand and everything.
Basically it was like in high school when your parents let your friends come over to drink in the basement, takes everyone’s car keys then puts one 12 pack down there and locks the door.
If you want to criticize Duke, do it for having the lamest riot ever, a pre-planned and adult supervised mini bonfire with a time limit. But if you think that’s comparable to people destroying property and flipping cop cars and clashing with police you’re just fishing for something to be outraged about.
