The Most Cursed Movie Release Ever Finally Has A New Release Date

The saga that is the X-Men spin-off movie 'The New Mutants' is a fascinating one.

All the way back in 2015, Josh Boone was tapped as director of the X-Men franchise. The movie then entered pre-production a full two years later in April 2017, with the movie expected to be released a year later on April 13th, 2018.

That release date didn't happen.

The movie 'It' was released to rave reviews and major success, and Fox changed course. According to reports surrounding the movie via The Tracking Board, "at first, Boone and Lee wanted to make a horror movie, but Fox was initially resistant to that idea, as the studio didn’t want to go “full horror.” A trailer showing off horror elements was released (TWO years ago!) for the movie and they decided to make 'The New Mutants' more like the director initially intended. The new release date? February 22nd, 2019.

That release date didn't happen.

A combination of problems, from avoiding releasing it alongside 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' and, apparently, needing to reshoot almost the entire movie, caused them to delay the movie to August 2nd, 2019.

That release date didn't happen.

As everyone knows, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and, in turn, control of the X-Men Universe and 'The New Mutants'. Bob Iger and the company didn't love what they had with the "Young Adult Horror" X-Men property and put the movie on hold. In the time leading up to the release, there was, oddly, decent news about the movie! Josh Boone loved that Disney and Marvel allowed him to go make the movie he wanted to make and star Maisie Williams even aid this to Entertainment Weekly, "The movie is exactly the movie we set out to make. I was nervous when they were talking about reshooting or re-editing that it was gonna be very different, but honestly, it’s exactly what we set out to do.” The movie would finally be set for release, for real, on April 3rd, 2020.

That release date didn't happen.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit and movie theaters were shut down. What would happen to 'The New Mutants'? Would it go to Disney+? Would it land on Hulu? Actually, those really weren't even options!

Yeah, Disney isn't going to hand HBO, who is about to launch their own streaming service in HBO Max, a Marvel property to release on their own.

So that brings us to August 28th, 2020, a date that, honestly, I can see being delayed yet again. The pandemic has been unpredictable, Los Angeles and the surrounding areas just had an extension on their "stay at home" order and New York City is far from seeing the end of the quarantine

To recap, this has been the journey for 'The New Mutants':
1) April 13th, 2018 (DELAYED)
2) February 22nd, 2019 (DELAYED)
3) August 2nd, 2019 (DELAYED)
4) April 3rd, 2020 (DELAYED)
5) August 28th, 2020 (HAPPENING?)

I hope this movie is good. But, more importantly, I just hope it gets released.

We were supposed to interview the cast for Lights Camera Barstool before the pandemic hit! Hopefully, that can still happen, because it would likely mean that movie theaters might be a bit more back to normal?

We can only hope.
