Wow, so I had heard about Nix heading to the G League yesterday and it was essentially waiting to figure out his signed LOI to leave UCLA for the G League pathway program. It's another massive get for the G League. Nix is the No. 13 recruit, a 5-star PG, who chose UCLA over Alabama, Kansas, Kentucky and Maryland.
Really this is just showing a couple of things. 1) The G League pathway program is a legit option for these guys. Offers aren't going to be in the Jalen Green category all the time ($500k) but it's enough to make these guys skip college. Why does this matter? First, we're losing more and more upperclassmen (the redshirt sophomore/junior) leaving early for a 2-way contract or overseas. Instead of replacing those guys with top-end freshmen talent, those freshmen are now leaving for the G League. This is the 3rd top-15 guy in this class to leave. That means we're getting worse and worse hoops early on and less talent.
Now the question is does coronavirus play into this here? Will we continues to see this when there's more certainty about college athletics and college basketball. It's worth asking. Either way, we now have a serious contender for someone to take top talent from college hoops. Yes, college hoops will survive because we cheer for laundry. But, we're seeing more people (freshmen and others) leaving.
