[The Athletic] - The one thing about Michael Jordan was he never asked me to do something that he didn’t fucking do. When people see this they are going say, ‘Well he wasn’t really a nice guy. He may have been a tyrant.’ Well, that’s you. Because you never won anything. I wanted to win, but I wanted them to win to be a part of that as well. Look, I don’t have to do this. I am only doing it because it is who I am. That’s how I played the game. That was my mentality. If you don’t want to play that way, don’t play that way.”
Jordan then does something extraordinary, and I’m glad the filmmakers left it in. He asks for a break. He has become so emotional, near tears, that he has to get away for a moment.
Fuck yes. I want every single story leading into this week's first episode drop of The Last Dance more than anything realistically in life right now. Give me shit like Jordan had to take breaks from crying on camera. I want to know all the background info. I want to know how this was all put together, set for a release in June, only for it to be pushed up to April.
As a diehard basketball guy that was born in the 80s, obviously The Last Dance is something that's going to be must watch (along with a quarantine). Not only that but I'm fascinated by the Bulls and this era. I've said it before but I fucking hated MJ - how could I not? He quite literally ruined every NBA season for me except the year he played baseball and then OJ's chase ruined the Finals for my beloved Knicks. But what a weird ass team. You had Rodman, the ultimate weirdo. You had Scottie Pippen, who always wanted to be more than Robin to MJ's Batman. You had Phil. You had MJ being a lunatic when it came to winning. Yet it somehow worked. It always fucking worked no matter how upset it made me.
But now hearing that MJ needed to take breaks because he was emotional? An even bigger hell yes. I do need to know what's really making him break down. This was always a dude who didn't give a fuck what people thought about him - or at least appeared to be that way. I need to see the moments where he gets choked up. I need to hear all the stories.
