"Disney+ is developing a reboot of former ABC comedy Doogie Howser, M.D., that will feature a teenage girl at its center.
The new project has a working title of Doogie Kealoha, M.D., and comes from How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat veteran Kourtney Kang. Disney-owned 20th Century Fox TV, which produced the original series and where Kang has an overall deal, is the studio.
The Disney+ project's lead character is a half-Asian, half-white 16-year-old girl with a genius-level intellect who has breezed through college and medical school and is now working as a doctor in Hawaii."
My introduction to Doogie Howser was actually in 'Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle' during the NPH introduction scene.
This is mostly because the show was over before I was born, so I don't have a particularly huge connection to it. That said, it's one of those pop culture references everyone knows for a reason, and that's because it's well liked. I'm sure internet people are going to have a very normal and level-headed response to the new lead being a half-Asian, half-White girl, but luckily there is a very simple solution for anyone shidding their diaper over that: Don't watch. If you can't stand a 30 year old show getting a reboot with a female lead, then watch something else. I think there is plenty of promise here because people will ALWAYS tune in for a medical drama. And I mean always. You could make a show starring Lena Dunham, Andy Dick, Bill Maher etc. and as long as it's set in a hospital, you're guaranteed at least 2 seasons.
