It's Official: Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje Will Headline UFC 249 On April 18th

Just like he said he would, Dana White has unveiled the UFC 249 main event today via Twitter, and it's one hell of a slobberknocker. With UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov unable to make it back to the United States (in conditions he would be comfortable fighting under), Justin Gaethje will now step up to face Tony Ferguson for the interim title at 155lbs.

As for a location, Dana only cared to divulge that it will be on Earth, so we can rule out that Moon idea...

...most "insiders" seem to think it'll be somewhere in the United States, on the West Coast, however.

Justin Gaethje, if you're unaware, is one of the best fighters in the world, and easily one of the most creative and violent...

Before this, many believed he was next in line for Conor McGregor himself, and he damn well could've been.

Instead, though, he was offered Tony Ferguson for a second time, and he accepted immediately...

This is a tremendous fight on paper - truly one of the best the lightweight division has seen recently - but I'll be honest: I don't know how to feel about it!

Don't get me wrong: I'm very happy this is happening (it personally benefits me on the content/pageviews side of things, and it's gonna give me something to watch on that April 18th), but it puts Khabib/Tony in serious jeopardy of ever happening once again, and I don't know if that trade-off is worth it!

Isn't the whole appeal of that fight is that both of 'em are on unprecedented 12-fight win streaks? What if Gaethje snaps Ferguson's and becomes the Interim Lightweight Champion? Khabib has said many times that he's only got a few more fights left in him, and he's obviously gonna have to take another break for Ramadan this year, plus he's always gonna have the looming rematch with Conor and the pipedream superfight with Georges St-Pierre on his mind…we need to accept that we may not ever see Khabib/Tony if Gaethje wins here! How heartbreaking would that be?! All because we couldn't wait another 5 months after waiting 5 years? I dunno.

Again, though, I'm not gonna shit on the UFC for providing us entertainment when we need it the most, ESPECIALLY considering how much fun we wound up having with WrestleMania this weekend. I'm gonna watch the fights and enjoy 'em. Namajunas vs Andrade II is a BADASS co-main event as well. It's just a risky game they're playing here and that couldn't go unacknowledged.

P.S. Contract signing photos where the participants are signing with their finger on a touch screen just slap different…
