After Mass Shaming On Social Media, NCAA Approves "Exception" For Trevor Lawrence's GoFundMe

I'm assuming you saw it yesterday, but if not, here is a quick summary: Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend started a GoFundMe for those (and their families) suffering from COVID-19. Pretty nice gesture! However, due to NCAA rules, Trevor and his girlfriend had to shut it down.

Almost immediately after this happened, an onslaught of social media shame forced the NCAA's hand. Were they going to show true compassion for once or would they stick to their guns?

This was a dangerous precedent the NCAA has set. It appears our collective shaming is starting to have an effect on them.

This could be a big moment in adjusting the NCAA rules to allowing their athletes to have regular, you know, capitalistic rights in American society. I could've started a fundraiser tomorrow and nobody would blink. Would I have to get it approved by Dave? Yeah, sure. The NCAA can still have rules, but they need to have common sense. Should there be a governing body that makes sure no athletes are running fake charities? Yeah, but that governing body shouldn't make it hard for a Trevor Lawrence of the world to start a GoFundMe for COVID-19 patients and their families.

It starts with allowing small things like GoFundMe's without any issue and then the slope starts to get a little bit more slippery for the old boomers at the NCAA. Before you know it, we'll have these players getting paid.

I can see it now. The 30 for 30 on how the NCAA changed forever. There will be a 30 second to a minute-long spot where some historian talks to us about the effects Coronavirus had on the NCAA allowing their student-athletes to profit. It all started thanks to Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend, which was followed by an onslaught of social media shame.
