Well that didn't take long at all! Damn. About 2 hours ago the DC Department of Health recommended non-essential gatherings be postponed or canceled.
And how did the Caps/Wizards respond? By calling themselves essential, bitch!
Monumental - Today, the DC Department of Health recommended “that non-essential mass gatherings, including conferences and conventions, be postponed or cancelled.” Per DC Health, mass gatherings are defined as events where 1,000 or more people are congregating in a specific location.
At the current direction of the NBA and NHL, our games will go on as scheduled and be open to spectators. We are in constant contact with both leagues and should they update their guidance, we will update the public accordingly.
Fucking BOLDDDDD decision. I don't know what to think of it. I worry that they are setting themselves up for a very, very bad time when someone attends a Caps game who then tests positive for Corona and the entire 18,000 person crowd has to be quarantined. Obviously that's why the Warriors et al are going to be playing in front of empty arenas, to mitigate that sort of risk.
On the other hand…I'm not actually sure what the other hand is, to be honest. At first I wrote "I guess they decided life must go on" but then I thought about how dumb that is because well…for many life isn't going on. People are dying and entire countries are in quarantine. I don't see what they gain I guess because it will only take 1 person out of 20,000 for this to be a huge issue.
I'm kinda stumped while writing this blog to be quite honest. I don't want them to play in front of empty arenas but it seems like that is going to become the status-quo while health officials figure out how to slow down coronavirus. And in the grand scheme of things if playing 2 games for tiny crowds can save some lives, don't you have to do it?
I don't know. Maybe I'm just getting played by the hype machine. It's hard to tell right now what is going on. For everyone. And you're a ding dong if you don't admit that. Our elected officials don't seem to really know anything, and if they do, they certainly are hesitant to tell us. Other countries have tested 10x the number of people we have tested. If this virus takes off the way it did in Italy we are in a world of trouble. So I don't know what the right decision is, let's just hope the Caps/Wiz didn't just make a really, really bad one.
