Curbed - Long Island City fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to beat the clam diggers of City Island. The Bronx enclave bested the hot Queens’ neighborhood by 1135 to 989 votes, which means that City Island is the 2014 Curbed Cup Neighborhood of the Year. The finals drummed up quite a bit of discussion, with many City Islanders rallying for their neighborhood, which pushed its way into the Curbed Cup as the no. 16 seed by welcoming its first new residential development in 15 years. But it’s clear that City Island won because of a community campaign, not because of new real estate projects, making this the second year in a row that fierce neighborhood pride made the difference. Now that the fake gold trophy is in your hands, City Island, there’s only one thing left to do: throw a party.

Bronx, we in here! City Island, stand up!

Poor Long Island City. Had a cake walk to the finals beating Mott Haven, 57th Street, and then the fucking Financial District. They just ran into a BUZZSAW in City Island in the finals. Meanwhile take a look at the top half of the bracket. Took out the gays in Chelsea, Taylor Swift in Tribeca, embarrassed Crown Heights and mowed down LIC to be crowned King of New York. All as a SIXTEEN SEED. Do you believe in miracles??? The greatest underdog story of all time.

Was it the KFC effect? Maybe. Probably. Certainly can’t hurt your cause having F List Celebrity bloggers hailing from your hood.

Was it the seafood?? Could be. From Artie’s down to Sammy’s and everywhere in between, you’re not gonna get a cheaper, better lobster in this city.

Was it the Puerto Ricans??? No, no it definitely was not the Puerto Ricans causing 4 miles worth of traffic on Mother’s Day. That was probably a big negative as was the NYPD firing range. But despite it all we prevail in the biggest upset in NYC history.

Now somebody get Fat Joe and Jennifer Lopez on the line. Meet me at the Morris for a victory party.
