Hunting For First Place: Vermont Searches For Third Straight Conference Win

After dropping its conference opener last week vs. Stony Brook, Vermont found itself in (what at least to the team) was a rare position. Prior to last week’s game, the Catamounts (12-6, 2-1) had lost just THREE regular season conference games over the course of the last THREE seasons. An incredible run, no matter how biased this unbiased journalist may be. So, with little margin for error for UVM to get back to where it wants to be, the team’s back was against the wall. How do the VCats rebound? Beat UMBC on the road by 24. After that? Dominate Binghamton by 19. Vermont is ascending towards the top of the America East standings, and Coach Becker and company have another chance to jump another team today, welcoming Hartford (10-8, 3-0) to Burlington. Let’s preview today’s matinee taking place at Patrick Gym.

Uhh Hey JJ: Senior forward Anthony Lamb passed former Northeastern guard J.J. Barea for No. 25 on the America East all-time scoring list Wednesday at Binghamton. Lamb picked up 12 points against the Bearcats for 1,685 in his career, five more than Barea. 1685 was the same year of the Battle at Sedgemoor: when King James II beat Duke of Monmouth. For what it’s worth, Duke has played Monmouth twice in the history of college basketball. The Blue Devils prevailed both times.

Duncan Double Hunt: Sophomore guard Robin Duncan is coming off his third Morgan Stanley Player of the Game performance this season, after scoring 10 points and hauling in 8 boards vs. Binghamton. That game marked the third time this season that he was a couple of rebounds away from a double-double, as he is looking to become the second Duncan brother to accomplish that benchmark for Vermont. If you were to buy three Dunkin’ Donuts, one for each Duncan who has played for the Catamounts, it would cost you $2.97.

Sellout in the 802: UVM officials are expecting a sold out Patrick Gym this afternoon, a venue that has a capacity of 3,266. If that is the case, approximately 7.7% of the Burlington population (42,239) will be in attendance today to see their Catamounts try to take down one of the league’s undefeated teams. Vegas expects the Catamounts to make a statement today (UVM -17, O/U 132). But do you?

Go Cats Go.
