BREAKING MOOS Per Pardon My Take: The Premier Lacrosse League Is Expanding To 7 Teams In 2020

Premier Lacrosse League - Denver - Day 1

PMTOn the October 23, 2019 episode of Barstool Sports’ podcast Pardon My Take presented by Cash App, Premier Lacrosse League co-founder and player Paul Rabil walked into the studio to offer some breaking news.

“Officially, the PLL is expanding to a 7th lacrosse club in 2020. First time you heard it here first,” said Rabil, a recurring guest on the show.

The news was met with much excitement, but also a bit of hesitation.

“No”, Rabil responded emphatically after PMT co-host Dan “Big Cat” Katz asked if he was worried that the league was expanding too fast. And when asked about if the league was worried about having an odd number of teams by fellow co-host PFT Commenter, Rabil mentioned that the odd number of teams now offers teams to have “natural byes” throughout the season.

“It’s shit like that which really makes you realize that lacrosse is the Sport of the Future,” said everybody in the comment section.

Sport of the Future officially confirmed. Tell me the last time that a professional sports league broke some major news like this on such a platform? Not once, not ever. But the Premier Lacrosse League knows how to get the word out there. And after a successful inaugural season, the league is making the jump from 6 to 7 teams in 2020.

The PLL was floating around the idea of expansion for a little while now. I think everybody had an idea that there were just way too many nasty players out there for there to only be 6 teams. You could put together a dirty team just with the guys who didn’t dress regularly this season. Also there are a few big name players who could potentially be making the switch over from the other professional field lacrosse league this year, as well as an absolutely loaded draft class graduating in 2020. Guys like Grant Ament, Michael Sowers, Jeff Teat, TD Ierlan, Dox Aitken, Mac O’Keefe, etc. etc. So with the success of the first season combined with the fact that there are just too many sick lacrosse players out there, early expansion only makes sense. But instead of going to an even 8 teams, the PLL made the smart move and is just going with 7.

That does two things right there. First, like Paul mentioned it gives the schedule some natural byes for teams. Not sure if you guys know this or not but 2 teams play a game against each other. So if there are 6 teams, that means that there are still only 3 games every week just with one team having a bye. You’re welcome for that math lesson. But now life and the schedule is going to be a little easier for these guys with another bye or two built into their schedule out of necessity. It also 2) allows the PLL to still just have 3 game weekends. Which means that they don’t need to spend any additional money on everything it takes to add another game to a weekend. That means no additional venue rental or no additional broadcast costs. So they’re adding another team, but for the most part the league can still stay how it was this past summer.

BUT WAIT! It gets better. Because for maybe the first time in in Pardon My Take, we have a Back-To-Back Breaking Moos announcement.

PMT – “We are shopping the name of the 7th lacrosse club with the two of you, and Hank,” Rabil said. “Caveat here–if the name gets decided, you guys will also be owners of stock options in the Premier Lacrosse League,” he continued.

All I’m saying is that if we don’t get the Chilladelphia Beagles in the PLL this year, then we riot.

Now excuse me while I go train for open tryouts. More roster spots available means there’s still a chance.
