Zion Is Treating The NBA Like A Goddamn Video Game

Yes, let me start this by saying I know it’s preseason. Yada, yada, yada. The fact is we’re seeing Zion do shit against starters (he’s done this against Rudy Gobert) and look the part of what those who actually watched him in college thought of his game. Those that watched a game or two or just his YouTube highlights thought he was an undersized fat guy that was a freak dunking. Now, that’s not necessarily false, but he’s also someone who can create for himself. He’s been unreal at getting the ball in an ISO set and using his mismatch to get to the rim. When he gets to the rim you’re not stopping him.

And yeah, there are questions about his shooting – even though he hit a three in the preseason. But the fact is he doesn’t have to worry about that right now. How many true 4s/small ball 5s can actually stick with Zion? That’s what makes him a freak. He’s so unique in the fact that he’s 6’5″ with handles and a VERY underrated passer.

While his highlights are video game-esque, so are his numbers. Just one of the most absurd shot charts I can remember in a game:

Listen, again, it’s preseason but NBA preseason is a bit different. He’s playing against real dudes – again look at the clip finishing over Gobert. Yes, you can overreact to preseason. But this isn’t an overreaction. The dude is going to be just fine in the NBA. He’s going to be what we saw at Duke in terms of someone who can finish at the rim over anyone. He’s going to create for others. Plus that Zo/Zion lob is going to be awesome all year.

That said, I stand with my guy.
