Houston QB D'Eriq King To Sit Out Rest Of Season, Redshirt And Then Transfer
Shocking news out of Houston. Star QB D’Eriq King has announced that he is going to sit out the rest of the season in order to redshirt. This comes not because he is hurt or that he’s been benched. Instead, I suppose, the senior is doing this to save a year of eligibility when he transfers this offseason thanks to being able to redshirt with a maximum of 4 games played.
Houston’s start to the 2019 season hasn’t been spectacular, but I’d say it’s far from a complete mess. 1-3 isn’t what they wanted, but outside of their loss to Oklahoma, they’ve been within one score in both losses. Tulane needed an annexation of Puerto Rico to win. King has been great in the Dana Holgorsen offense having 12 TDs in just 4 games.
King will be a top tier transfer this offseason. Oklahoma will probably put in a call. He’s pretty much a JV version of Kyler Murray. Lord knows what Lincoln Riley could do with him. I’d assume he would be immediately eligible thanks to redshirting this season. One of Lincoln Riley’s eyeball emoji tweets this offseason could very well mean D’Eriq is shipping up to Oklahoma.
Is this a move that more G5 players will do in the future? Play 4 games, redshirt, and then transfer to a P5 school? We’ll see.
This is another blow to Dana Holgorsen in his first year at Houston. I think he’ll be fine at Houston for the substantial future, but losing one of the best players in the G5 could mean a non-bowl appearance.
