So...Now What?
The first two losses for the Giants were pretty ugly. Still, they came out of each tough matchup with a couple of reasons to believe they weren’t THAT far off from hitting their stride. But now, after what was easily their softest opponent marching out barely half their starting defense, the G-Men are reeling from their 3rd-worst shutout loss in history. You’d think any NFL-caliber offensive line would hold up against a simple 4-man rush to allow their 390 yards/game passing attack to pick on a secondary missing 3 of their 4 starters. Well apparently, Big Blue isn’t trotting out an NFL-caliber line. Everyone was awful, but none worse than Will Beatty – the same Will Beatty who just inked a $7+ mil/year contract in the off-season – who was torched for 3 sacks and flagged for a hold to negate their only score. Forget the run game or the defense. If the line can’t hold their own in one-on-one battles so Eli can sling it to their biggest weapons…well, this is what happens.
So now what? There’s absolutely nothing to build on. Just negative momentum behind them as they square off against the upstart 3-0 KC Queefs at Arrowhead on Sunday. Not exactly the ideal situation to believe the Giants can squash the “0-3 start = adios, playoffs” talk. But I have no idea how to handle a losing season. They haven’t been a sub-.500 squad since 2004. So I gotta find a little silver lining. Forget the “remember the last time they were 0-2″ or “remember the last time Coughlin was on the hot seat” crap. Reality is, the Giants are still within a game of all but 5 NFC teams. Green Bay, SF & the Falcons are all just 1-2. The opportunity to finish 9-4 and steal a wild card spot is still there. I have no idea how the team I watched yesterday will pull that off, but at least it buys me another week of defending the season before I gotta go with the whole “this is the price you pay for a title every five years” routine.
