The Return of 69 Jokes? An Analysis with Gronk
The majority of 2017 and 2018 marked the prime of 69 jokes. People would try to squeeze in a joke in any social or professional setting possible, and it was funny. “How can I talk about something inappropriate without being too inappropriate?” Well, resorting to the mention of the number 69 was the answer for millions of Americans.
Even I tried getting in on it by throwing a “69, nice” tweet into a post game interview tweet:
This is September 2019 Jake telling November 2018 Jake that the tweet was a force and not funny (the bleachers falling and ruining the interview was classic, though. Had to have fun with that).
But as of now, 69 jokes have lost their touch. On today’s Pardon My Take, Mr. Cat, Mr. Commenter, and guest Rob “Coming Back Week 14” Gronkowski evaluated a meaningful dilemma: How and when will 69 jokes return?
Here is the transcribed portion of the interview discussing the issue:
Mr. Commenter: We are big 69 fans, or I should say, we were. Feel like the joke has kind of been run into the ground by D***** R***** recently. He ruined it by betting 69 cents on the Browns to win the Super Bowl. And once D***** gets involved in everything, please also bleep his name out, because he’ll just get a hard on for from hearing it. How do we make 69 great again?
Gronk: You know, I was actually just talking about that on the ride here. We were driving up and we’re like 69… Isn’t that… it’s kind of like, in the past? Like this is crazy we were literally just saying that on the car ride up here. We were like, 69 jokes kind of faded away, which they kind of have. I totally 100 percent agree. And you know El Pres was looking for the 69 joke for the pizza.
Mr. Cat: That’s the problem. Everyone’s looking for it.
Gronk: That’s the problem. So, you know I gave him the score, but I kind of had to switch it up a little bit. I did 6.8769. You know, because you just can’t do a 6.9, everyone was looking for it. So, I don’t know man. I need some ideas.
Mr. Cat: 420 is pretty hot right now.
Gronk: It is. That’s why that’s why I’m with CBD now. Exactly why I’m with CBD.
Mr. Commenter: I would say either stay away for a little bit, and then bring it back with something real big, like your own “Fyre Fest” except it’s called like, “69 Fest” after like a year off entirely. Or, just the one where you check in as a tackle eligible every single play and they announce it [69 being eligible]. I think that would be funny, too.
Gronk. Yeah it would be. I think 69 might need a break off a little bit and it’ll just come naturally.
There are a few reasons why 69 jokes no longer have the mojo that they used to have a couple of years ago. Number one is obvious: the clear force by plenty of people (see: example mentioned above involving D***** R*****). That basically turned into people overdoing it, and now it’s hard to execute it. Let’s talk baby steps, though. During the interview, Gronk brought up a story about one of his favorite blocks, and the 69 joke was natural:
This is what we’re talking about. The more natural, the better. There is nobody who fulfills the requirements more to attack this dilemma than Gronk himself:
So, will 69 jokes make a glorious return? Will they continue to be overused? Or will a new trend take the internet by storm in the coming months? I guess we will find out soon enough.
