Grading the Newest Sex Scandal Teacher, September 6, 2019
Colorado – Sexually explicit texts allegedly sent by Basalt High School teacher Brittany von Stein to one of her students advanced a police investigation that resulted in an arrest Wednesday, according to a court document.
Von Stein, 26, the music teacher and choir director at Basalt High School, allegedly was sexting with the student while he was hanging out with friends one night, according to an affidavit for an arrest warrant for von Stein. The student fell asleep and his friends read the texts, said the affidavit filed by Thomas Wright, a school resource police officer with Basalt Police Department. The date that the boys spent the night together wasn’t revealed. The affidavit said it was the same day as a memorial service for a student at Basalt High School.
One of the boys told Wright about the texts on Aug. 29. That juvenile “said they saw messages from Ms. von Stein talking about kissing and sex,” Wright’s affidavit said. “(The source) said the next morning, the entire group confronted (the student). (He) admitted that the texts were from Ms. von Stein. He further admitted to having an ongoing sexual relationship with Ms. von Stein.”
The alleged victim asked the other boys to “keep it a secret,” the affidavit said. …
“(The student) said that during one of those private lessons, he kissed Ms. von Stein,” the affidavit said. “He said she told him that no one could ever know that happened; it would have to be their secret.”
The student acknowledged he flirted with von Stein via texts and although she didn’t flirt back initially, she eventually became “very personal with him through text.”
The student told Wright there were rumors he was having sex with von Stein, but that it wasn’t true. He admitted he might have bragged to friends while intoxicated about having sex with her. …
Wright was able to obtain the student’s phone from his mother. … “(The student) explained in detail that he had been having an ongoing sexual relationship with Ms. von Stein” in January and February 2019, the affidavit said. “(The student) said all of the sexual contact with Ms. von Stein occurred at her home” in Carbondale.
“I was able to document at least three separate encounters that (the student) said von Stein had sexual intercourse with him,” Wright’s affidavit said.
The student said his phone contained texts that detailed their sexual relationship.
And – The Roaring Fork School District hired von Stein after she graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in music education. At that time, the Basalt middle and high schools’ choir program collectively counted about 80 students among its ranks. By the 2017-18 school year, just two years later, that number had nearly tripled, to more than 210.
What a piece of investigative police work. What a detective story. It’s like one of the cop dramas on the SiriusXM channel that plays old time radio shows. Like “Dragnet” or “I Was a Communist for the FBI” (actual title). An investigation starts by chance thanks to an ill-timed bit of sext messaging. The parties deny there’s anything going on. They stonewall. Their story doesn’t jibe with the ones the students friends are telling. But there’s more getting aroused than just bunch of teenage boys. It also arouses suspicion in one intrepid school resource officer. But he’s not getting anywhere. Until finally, there’s a crack in the case. The kid’s mom lets the flatfoot have the phone. Doggedly, he digs through the messages until he finds the smoking gun and blows this caper wide open. Under relentless questioning, the kid admits the truth. The cop gets the dates to line up with the evidence. The dame gets led away in handcuffs. Justice is served. Cue the organ music. Epilogue. The end.
The lesson here is that, while you maybe want keep having sex with your Music teacher, you can’t tell your friends. Even if they’ve stuck their noses into your sexts where they don’t belong, keep it to yourself. Lie. Don’t crack under questioning. You have to …
Well, let’s just let Brittany von Stein of The Ohio State University sing it for us:
That’s right, all you Choir students banging your teacher. Sing, but don’t tell. Lesson learned.
The Grades:
Looks: None of these pictures look like the same person, but they’re from published reports, so that’s Ms. von Stein, alright. I’m especially partial to the sort of middle income man’s Pam Beasley shot. But as mugshots go, she’s got a bit of a Saoirse Ronan “Lady Bird” thing going. I’ll let the concert appearance speak for itself. Few of us look our best in college.
Grade: C
Moral Compass/Bad Judgment: You’ve got to give Brittany credit. She’s obviously a huge asset to that music program, tripling it’s membership in just her first few years. Which is not only good for the students, the school and the cause of music education overall, it will give a teacher three times as many students to send sexy texts to the night a classmate of theirs is buried. I mean, that seems a little grim to me, but people grieve in different ways. Anyway, we’ve got phone corroboration of three different encounters, an admission by the student and eyewitnesses to the messages. Not to mention a definition of “choir boy” that is way, way different than what it meant when I was in school.
Grade: A
Intangibles: That video could be the best intangible of all time.
Grade: A+
Overall: B. We might see Brittany von Stein at the end of the year.
