The New Terminator Trailer Looks... Okay? I Think?

This franchise is a fucking mess, there’s really no debating that. ‘The Terminator’ and ‘T2′ are fucking classics, but everything after that is kind of trash. They have had to retcon a bunch of things, add uninspiring characters and much more. This new trailer looks okay, I think and I’d go as far to say it looks sort of solid. It’s better than the first trailer, that’s for sure.

Sarah Connor and a hybrid cyborg human must protect a young girl from a newly modified liquid Terminator from the future.

James Cameron being back holds some weight here. No matter what you think of ‘Avatar’, the guy is a genius and a brilliant marketer. (HOWEVER, despite the ‘Judgement Day’ angle, I really think releasing a trailer at midnight is dumb as hell. The hype and buzz aren’t there this morning. Weird move). The director Tim Miller also did ‘Deadpool’, so this is a solid combination.

Cameron knows the issues with the sequels (which he was not involved with)…

“One of the things that seemed obvious from looking at the films that came along later was that we would need to get everything back to the basics and that we would need to avoid the mistakes of making things overly complex and that we needed to avoid stories that jumps around in time and one that goes backward and forward in time,” he said. “Let’s keep it simple in the relative unity of time. With the story, let’s have the whole thing play out in 36 hours or 48 hours. In the first two movies everything plays out in less than two days in each one so there’s energy and momentum.” (via DEADLINE)

Here’s my big concern, though: the villain.

I know he is a machine, but the character just seems so fucking dead and dry. That’s a small thing I am picking up from the trailer and that is the emotion being a little flat. I know it is the “end of times” with the universe each time, but the movie being lifeless would truly sink it quickly. With that said, I won’t judge it too hard just based on the trailer.

Arnold was in the previous movie, and it stunk, but I do think there’s potential for a resurgent role for his character…

‘The Terminator’ and ‘T2′ were so much more than big dumb action movies and I really hope ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ can avoid this problem.

It’s worth noting that Cameron also is eyeing a potential new trilogy, starting with ‘Dark Fate’. This is sort of funny coming from the guy who had strong takes on comic book movies and the Avengers, but I respect him wanting to continue his big-time franchise after years of trash.
