I Still Cannot Figure Out Why The Fuck Baker Mayfield Took A Completely Unprovoked Shot At Daniel Jones
So Baker Mayfield was the latest Cleveland Brown to be featured in GQ, which admittedly is a crazy sentence to be writing after the last 2 decades of Browns football. But they are clearly the hottest team in football right now just like the Cleveland Indians were following the events of Major League. With some success comes some shine, and GQ is squeezing every ounce of shine from the Browns.
This piece goes into Baker’s rookie year, college career, and getting Hit Stick’d to hell by a cop. But the part of the piece I didn’t see coming was his shot out of the fucking blue at the #Danwagon and my little lamb Daniel Jones.
GQ- Near our booth, a SportsCenter segment about the New York Giants catches Mayfield’s eye. “I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones,” Mayfield says, about New York’s much-maligned draft-day decision to spend the sixth pick on the quarterback from Duke (whose college record was a measly 17–19). “Blows my mind.”
I tell Mayfield that I’m mystified that so many supposedly expert quarterback scouts seem unable to predict what makes a good NFL quarterback. “Some people overthink it,” Mayfield says. “That’s where people go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win.”
What the FUCK is this guy’s problem? One minute I’m riding the #Danwagon with nothing but sunshine on my shoulders and dimes being placed in Giants receivers arms, the next we are under fire from someone not only in another division, but another conference altogether. I could understand if this was Dwayne Haskins taking a shot because he ended up on another NFC East team after spending months being linked to the Giants. Or Baker was simply acting like every other football fan on the planet and coming with the very fresh, original take about Daniel Jones being picked earlier than all the mock drafts said he would. Shit, I bet even Daniel was probably more than a little bit surprised his name was called at 6 before he did his awkward hug with Roger Goodell. But I thought there was a little bit of honor amongst NFL QBs. A fraternity even (not the problematic kind but the good brotherhood kind).
My bigger issue is I don’t get why Baker keeps kicking all things Big Blue that has already been kicked by every fan of the NFL over the last few months/years dating back to Baker’s weird comment out of the blue about Giants fans not being loyal or some shit.
I get he was going to bat for his new guy Odell and how there were as much Browns fans as Giants fans the last time these two teams met in the regular season.
Oops, that game was IN Cleveland. Maybe that was just a bad angle and Giants fans took over the good seats with that Big City money.
Okay, maybe not.
Anyway, I don’t get Baker’s anger towards the Giants. It’s not like the G-Men passed on him with the 2 pick for Saquon Barkley because Baker was picked first. And it’s not like the Giants traded Baker away for a safety and a couple picks which caused him to keep the Giants on the tip of his tongue nonstop.
Maybe Baker just is upset he’s not the quarterback everyone is talking about for once. I mean if leading your team to the cusp of the playoffs and getting married after following/unfollowing his now wife a million times like a psycho until she followed back doesn’t get you every headline during the NFL offseason, you might as well take shots at a New York team that has nothing to do with you before posing for these very normal pictures.
Or maybe the swag that makes Baker awesome is also what causes his to create ridiculous quotes and pictures. I don’t know. But my current QB2 and future QB1 lives by a different phrase altogether that does not have him posing like ARod in front of a mirror or Kobe in a white top hat.
The worst part about all this is I actually want to like the Browns because they are so fun and I share a kinship with their fans as a Knicks/Mets fan and I have felt like a hostage of the Gettleman Express every time he gets behind a microphone. I could live with Baker’s weird quote about Giants fans because that’s a shot against me and the fanbase that has a season ticket wait list that spans generations. But I can’t let him come at my guy. Not after all we’ve been through since the draft and the last two weeks.
So with all that being said, Baker Mayfield has officially been rebuked. As has Coley for wearing a Baker Mayfield jersey into work today. Because when it comes to Daniel Jones, you are either with us or against us. Buy a shirt now and hope the #Danwagon now before it leaves the station for good and runs over everyone in its path.
