A Minor League Baseball Team Had To Cancel And Reschedule A Bunch Of Games After A Mumford & Sons Concert Left Their Field Unplayable. Still Worth It

Billings Gazette – Never in the 21-year history of the Missoula Osprey has there been a lost weekend quite like this.

Because of poor outfield conditions, the O’s had to postpone their scheduled doubleheader against the Great Falls Voyagers on Sunday, marking the third night in a row Allegiance Field was deemed unplayable. In addition, Missoula’s Monday doubleheader against the Voyagers has been moved to Great Falls.

An area in right-center field suffered considerable damage during the Mumford & Sons concert, held on soggy grounds, on Aug. 11. The O’s tried to rectify the situation by adding topsoil in the middle of last week. The dirt on the surface of the troubled area has dried but there’s moisture caught underneath.

I’m pretty sure there are like 700 people selected every year at the MLB Draft. I can almost guarantee you right now that everybody reading this blog right now knows at least one person who has gone on to get drafted in like the 12th round, and then played a for a few years in the minors. So it’s not like we’re dealing with the elite of the elite or anything. The point that I’m trying to make here is that minor league baseball? Well,,,,I don’t know, man. I guess it’s a big deal for people who live in a place like Missoula, but losing a few minor league baseball games in the middle of August isn’t really that much to get worked up over. What were you going to miss? A couple boring hours of baseball with some whacky sort of promotional eating competition going at at some point during the game? There are like 500 games in a baseball season anyway so you have plenty more chances to go see that.

But a Mumford & Sons concert? I mean how many times are they going to stop in Missoula, Montana? I don’t think that’s necessarily an annual stop on their tour. So you get one chance to see the Grammy-winning Mumford & Sons maybe ever, as opposed to seeing the Missoula Osprey play pretty much every day. So you could either get the chance to see a bunch of guys who aren’t playing in the majors yet, or you could see this happen right in front of your face.

You go with Mumford 12 times out of 10. You could pretty much just cancel the rest of the season right now and it would be worth it every single time.

Now with that being said…well maybe there’s a way for this to work out for the fine folks of Missoula, Montana. Because you have to imagine that Mumford & Sons aren’t inherently evil people. You have to imagine that they have a heart. So maybe what we can do here is guilt them into going back. They may have wrecked the field and made it unplayable for a baseball game, but maybe they can just set a stage up in the parking lot and have Mumford & Sons play concerts there until the field is ready to go again. It’s the least they could do. Imagine spending $10 for a ticket to see a minor league baseball game and then you show up and get treated to one of the best concerts you’ll ever see in your life? It’s a win-win for everybody. The fans get treated to a show, the Osprey end up selling out every game, and Mumford & Sons just get to fuck around on the banjo some more. Everybody’s happy.
