Roanoke - For weeks, Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett has been cautioning his players against taking a step without planting both feet securely. Patricularly when climbing a ladder. Bennett knew that the regular-season ACC title was on the line when fourth-ranked Syracuse came to John Paul Jones, but little did he envision the celebration that followed a 75-56 Cavaliers victory. After being advised to stay off the floor, Virginia fans in a turn-away crowd of 14,593 stormed the court and watched as the UVa players cut down the nets. With its 13th straight victory, 12th-ranked Virginia (25-5, 16-1 ACC) claimed its first outright regular-season ACC title since 1981 — a span of 33 years. “We weren’t really expecting to cut down the nets,” said Joe Harris, one of three UVa seniors recognized before their final home game. “They kind of shuffled us back out there, which was pretty cool. “Some of the guys had talked about it before the game. I said, ‘Nah, there’s no way we’re cutting down the nets. Knowing coach Bennett, he’ll just want us to start getting ready for Maryland.’” The Cavaliers wrap up the regular season next Sunday in College Park, Md., but they’ve already clinched the No. 1 seed for the ACC tournament. Fourth-ranked Syracuse (26-3, 13-3) held onto third place in the ACC despite losing for the third time in four games.
Standings don’t lie. I can’t sit here and act like UVA doesn’t exist anymore. Cause they’re pretty impressive. And now have won the ACC outright for the first time since the early 80s. To me they’ve always just been “the smart school” in the ACC. They’d make noise here and there, give Maryland some bad losses, and then disappear again. But now this year they are just casually beast moding everyone and everything. But I guess the big question is- are they for real? Or are they just a system that has worked out really well for them?
289th in points scored, but the best defense in all of college basketball. While playing in the ACC. That’s bananers. Giving up the least amount of points while having to play a full ACC schedule is probably one of the most underrated amazing stories of this college basketball season. So nice job Cavs, golf clap for you. I suppose I’ll adopt you (with my already adopted GWU) for March, since my boys in College Park hate winning.
