Did You Know There's A UFC Championship Being Defended Tonight?

Hey ladies and gentlemen! Probably mostly gentlemen! Hope you’re having a great Saturday. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up that there’s a UFC Championship being defended tonight, being you probably weren’t aware!

At 8pm on ESPN+, the UFC Uruguay main card will begin, and in that card’s main event, Valentina Shevchenko looks to defend her UFC Flyweight Championship against longtime UFC veteran Liz Carmouche (who was in the first women’s fight in UFC history vs Ronda Rousey). It’s actually a super intriguing fight on paper, because while Valentina is being talked about as one of mixed martial arts’ most dominant champions at the moments – and deserves to be…

…when these two women first met in the cage back in 2010 at the beginning of their careers, Carmouche got the better of Shevchenko and handed her one of the only loses in her career. Sure, a LOT could change in ten years, but this dynamic always interests me given how much of a mental game MMA is. Valentina is the now champion of her division and has to enter this fight with the confidence that she can do something she already failed to do. That’s FASCINATING to me. Plus, Carmouche is still a legit legit legit fighter. She’s got insane strength, and wrestling, and ground and pound, so if she gets ahold of Valentina, I see a world in which the champ could really be put in trouble. On the other hand, Shevchenko’s striking/footwork combo could put on a clinic of stick and move boxing for five straight rounds.

There’s some other pretty decent fights on the card as well, broken down a little by The Big Goof Dana White here:

…so if you’ve got nothing else going on tonight, UFC Uruguay ain’t the worst option on television.
