NEWTOWN, Conn. — A Connecticut eighth-grader who misspelled the correct response to a “Jeopardy!” clue says he was cheated. Thomas Hurley III, 12, knew the correct answer to the “Final Jeopardy!” question about the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln — but mistakenly spelled it “emanciptation” and was ruled out by host Alex Trebek. He bet $3,000 of his $9,600 in winnings and finished well behind a rival who amassed $66,600. “I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final ‘Jeopardy!’ question,” he told The News-Times of Danbury. “It was just a spelling error.” The Newtown Middle School student won $2,000 as the runner-up. “Jeopardy!” producers defended Trebek’s decision. “If ‘Jeopardy!’ were to give credit for an incorrect response (however minor), the show would effectively penalize the other players,” they said. “We love presenting young people as contestants on our show and make every effort to be fair and consistent in their treatment.” Hurley’s mother, Suzanne, said her son was “a little stunned” by the loss. “He felt embarrassed,” she said. “It was hard to watch.”
Don’t you dare play the Newtown card here. Don’t you f’ing dare. I see what you’re trying to do and I don’t like it. I’m sorry for what happened at Sandy Hook but you answered the question wrong. It ain’t Emancipitation. Thomas this is not ‘Nam. This is Jeopardy. There are rules. It’s a gentleman’s game. Its not the fucking Daycare pre-school free-for-all Sajak is running at 7:30. So I’m sorry you’re up there talking about the Precipitation Proclamation and I’m sorry your town suffered a horrible tragedy but if we start bending the rules for every idiot who can’t spell we compromise the integrity of the game.
Not too mention a little self respect would be nice. Skylar is out there almost setting one day records and you’re crying about your second place finish. You would have lost by 50 fucking grand even if you got it right. Take your $2,000 courtesy of Aleve and whatever shred of dignity you still may have and be on your way.
