Thursday's Best Highlight Came From The WNBA
As a hockey media guy, there’s one type of clip I never get tired of watching. I absolutely love when a guy takes a few seconds during warm-ups and makes a little kid’s day/week/month/year. (Which is kind of funny because I’m not much of “kid guy” considering I got a vasectomy before I went bald. Or had kids.) YouTube has a bunch of compilation videos and the NHL made one of their top-notch post-season commercials using the theme. And maybe it’s the proliferation of cell-phone cameras and social media but I feel like players have these little pre-game interactions a lot more than prior generations.
But my adoration for these moments isn’t limited to the ice.
Last night in the ATL, Brittney Sykes and her Atlanta Dream squad just got waxed by 23 at home to the Las Vegas Aces. I’m sure it would’ve been a lot easier for her to head straight to the locker room and decompress with a couple of pops. Instead, Sykes did this…
She stopped to greet Atlanta superfan Mya and gave the sweet kid her game-used kicks. I mean, just look at Mya’s face at :05. But she didn’t stop there. She also asked Mya for her autograph. Mya, and many others, were moved to joyful tears by the scene because it was so genuine and pure. And with all the garbage headlines in sports, it’s nice to have something genuine and pure every once in awhile.
What a great, wise-beyond-her-years kid. And kudos to Sykes for what she did. A few minutes of her time gave Mya a lifetime of memories.
If you want to see more fans having their day made, have at it.
But this one of Cutch giving his batting gloves to two little kids might be my favorite.
