John Daly Gets To Use A Golf Cart At The PGA Championship Because He "Can't Walk More Than 6 Holes At A Time"

The PGA of America has granted Daly permission to use a cart at Bethpage Black because of arthritis in his right knee that, he says, prevents him from walking more than six holes at a time.

Daly filed his request under the Americans with Disabilities Act and will become the first player to ride a cart in a major since Casey Martin in the 2012 U.S. Open.

I’m sure this is the exact scenario that lawmakers had in their mind when they passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. To end discrimination of those with disabilities in all areas of life, including work, school, transportation, and on the golf course. This is a great day for the disabled community of this country.

But let’s be honest with ourselves here, this is also a great win for John Daly. Walking 18 holes SUCKS. I’m only a recreational golfer. It’s like my 8th best sport. But I vowed at like the age of 14 that I will never ever walk on the golf course ever again. I don’t care if it’s just 9 holes. Not worth it to me. And it’s definitely not worth it to John Daly. But what is worth it to him is having a golf cart with 4 cup holders in it. What are the odds those will be filled with beer? I would say close to 100%. And I know it’s probably against the rules, but he can just file a motion under the Constitutional Act that repealed prohibition. Plus, those beers probably won’t even be to get drunk. They’ll just be beers to cure a hangover from the night before. A little hair of the dog. Because now John Daly gets to drink at night knowing he doesn’t have to go out and walk 18 the next morning. Talk about a huge weight lifted off your shoulders.

Now I must say, I feel like this is a poor decision from the PGA. And I love John Daly. Everyone loves John Daly. But this sets a bad precedent for golf. I mean, Tiger Woods has a bad back. Can he use a cart? Imagine if a golfer didn’t actually have “arthritis in his right knee” and just happened to be overweight and out of shape. Can he use a cart? This is a slippery slope that golf is going down. Because not having to walk 18 holes 4x in a weekend is a huge advantage. Imagine if he wins. Not sure that’d be good for the future of the tour….but what a great day for the disabled community and America it would be.
