FYI: The Philadelphia Union Play For A Championship Tomorrow Against Seattle
If you keep up with the Union, you would have known for a little over a month now that they’ll be playing for the U.S. Open championship tomorrow at 7:30 down at PPL Park so this isn’t exactly news for you. But if your love affair with the beautiful game has died out a little since the World Cup, let’s take a quick moment to get fired up for tomorrow’s tilt against Clint Dempsey and the Sounders. The Union punched their ticket to the championship game after beating FC Dallas in PK’s 4-3 last month. Seattle beat the Chicago Fire 6-0. Most people are counting the Union out of this game, but that’s exactly how we’d like it to be. Nothing would be better than to shock the best team in the MLS right now and come away from the oldest soccer tournament in the USA as champions, and it’s totally somewhat possible.
The Union have turned things around over the past few months since Jim Curtin took over as interim manager. They’ve only lost 1 game in their past 10 and are making a solid run as the MLS playoff race tightens up. There’s a ton of new found confidence growing down on the riverfront which should hopefully come up huge if Seattle ends up taking an early lead with their dynamic offense. They’re the type of team that could counter at the right moment and steal one away. Sure, Seattle has the names. They have Dempsey, they have Yedlin, they have Martins. But the Union play a great brand of blue collar soccer and I find it hard to believe that anyone in the MLS could beat up Conor Casey in a fight. And you know what? I’m getting real sick of Seattle as a whole. They just won the Super Bowl, they’re about to get themselves an NHL franchise and if it sounds like I’m just being a little jelly, it’s because I am. But they don’t deserve shit right now. The Sons of Ben and the rest of PPL Park are going to be electric tomorrow night and I highly suggest getting yourself there. Philly is starved for another champion and I don’t care if it’s just the Union winning the U.S. Open. I want those trophies. I need those trophies. So I’m going Union 2, Sounders 1. Lock it in.
