The Hockey Gods Are Cruel Bitches: Carter Hart Has A Lower Body Injury, Will Miss At Least 10 Days

Alright so I know this word has made a bit of a comeback in recent years but I still only like to use it in specific situations where it in truly paramount to the situation. But the Hockey Gods? Well they are a bunch of cunts. That’s right. The Hockey Gods are Hard-C’s. Some real C U Next Tuesdays.

The Philadelphia Flyers are an organization that has been desperate for a goaltender since Pelle Lindbergh. Ron Hextall was solid and everything but people are often too blinded by the fact that he scored goals and fought a lot to remember that he actually wasn’t that reliable of a goalie. I mean it’s been DECADES since the Flyers have had someone between the pipes who you could actually count on. But Carter Hart is that guy and he’s the guy moving forward for this organization. Unfortunately, he just started his NHL career a little too hot and it caused him to play maybe a little bit more than a 20-year-old rookie goaltender should have. Like he probably didn’t need to start on both legs of that home&home against Detroit last weekend. He probably didn’t need to start in both the Tampa and Montreal games this past week. Looking back on it now, that would probably explain why he looked so off in the 1st periods of both of those games–kid has been logging some ridiculous NHL minutes and it took a toll on his body. And now here we are. It doesn’t sound like a serious injury or anything like that, but it’s just a cruel reminder that we can never have nice things.

Now I will say this–even before this news came out this morning, I thought that starting Brian Elliott in net for the Stadium Series game tonight was the right call. I understand it’s the “biggest game” of the Flyers season considering it’s a marquee game on the NHL’s schedule. And I get that you want your organization to show their faith in the goalie of the future by throwing him out there on such a huge stage. But he let up 3 goals in under 11 minutes in each of his last two starts and got yanked in both of them. Are you really going to put a 20-year-old kid out there in front of 60,000 people tonight against a team that has guys like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel, and just expect him to be able to mentally handle the situation if things aren’t going his way again early on in this game? I have nothing but faith in Carter Hart moving forward. But if he was healthy and started this game tonight and then ended up getting shelled early and pulled again? Yikes. That wouldn’t be great for the kid’s confidence. So even before the injury news, I was totally fine with Elliott getting the start tonight. Now that the injury news is added in? It just makes it easier to swallow.

By the way, Elliott’s lid for tonight is pure fucking flames.

If the Flyers were making the decision on which goalie starts tonight based on whoever was breaking out the best helmet for the Stadium Series, then Brian Elliott was leaps and bounds the easiest decision ever made. The matte finish. The Eagle wings. That right there is a ten out of ten.

P.S. – Really hoping Talbot gets in at some point tonight though just so the Flyers can set the record for most goaltenders used in a season by one NHL team.

I’ll see everybody at the tailgate.
