PETA Asks British Village Of 'Wool' To Change Its Name To 'Vegan Wool'

Since the 11th Century a small village of less than 6,000 people has graced the Southern edge of Britain only miles from the English Channel. Though it seems a place of little change, its name has morphed over the years…

Using old Saxon words for “springs” or “wells” it was called ‘Wyllon’ between 1002 – 1012AD, then it appeared as Wille or Welle in writings from 1086, then Welles by 1212. And somewhere along the line that transformed into the current name, “Wool”.

So – just to clarify before moving ahead – the village named Wool has nothing to do with sheep in any way, shape or form.

::Cue PETA representative sending the village a wacky sheep shearing abuses memo at warp speed::

According to the Daily Mail UK:

An animal rights group has been roundly mocked after suggesting the Dorset village of Wool change its name – as it currently ‘promotes cruelty to sheep’.

Instead PETA want the 1,000 year old village to be called ‘Vegan Wool’ – to the derision of residents.

Elisa Allen, a director at PETA, has written to Wool Parish Council with the ‘ridiculous’ request. She said the change in name would promote kindness to sheep.

The activist said they would give a ‘cruelty-free’ woollen blanket to all 2,000 households in the village if they agree to the suggestion.

In an interview with The Telegraph the author of the memo, Ms. Allen, said the request was a “creative and fun way to reach the public with the facts” and said they hoped it would help highlight the abundance of “warm, cruelty-free fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, hemp, and soya-bean fibre”.

Unfortunately that didn’t really work & now the people of the village are feeling triggered, giving them a common emotional ground with PETA for once.

After some Googling it’s clear PETA is not wrong about animal abuse in the sheep shearing world & that’s a terrible thing… (Gonna have to look up images of rainbows & puppies to clear my mental palate after what I stumbled upon this morning.) But the org has alienated so many people/communities with their tone-deaf, aggressive, & self-righteous campaigns over the years they’ve made themselves the story instead of the animal issues at hand.

That seems to be the case in Wool where people are simply annoyed right off the bat & are only acting to make fun of PETA instead of looking up the message PETA wanted to get across. Social media comment sections on the story are pretty much a roast of the idea regardless of whether she was ‘joking around’ for a good cause or not.

Heads up to Chicken, AK and Rabbit Hash, KY – stay on your toes. An angry memo’s probably on the way.
